Few men in Luxembourg put art and architecture at the service of their glory as did Peter Ernst von Mansfeld (1517-1604). The residence of the governor of Luxembourg was one of the most important in the Spanish Netherlands.

La Fontaine combined gardens, fountains and buildings inspired by Italian suburban villas and some parts were even reminiscent of Antiquity. At the same time, the Mansfeldschlass meets the requirements of the court in Brussels. Without a doubt, Mansfeld himself was involved in the planning of this theatrical complex.
